Helotes began as vast land with a single home that served as the stop for stagecoaches and post office for cowboys. When portions of the land were sold, different establishments were built, thus, marking the beginning of the rising economy of the town. Despite its humble beginnings, Helotes has grown from simple farmland to a lively city bursting with life and is now considered among the best places to live in Northwest San Antonio. 

Helotes had been recognized quite a few times in the past. In 2013, Bloomberg Business Field named the city as “The Best Town in Texas to Raise Kids.” In 2017, Helotes earned a place in the “Top 10 Most Successful Cities in Texas.” The most recent recognition received was from Reader’s Digest when they featured the historic Old Town Helotes as the “Coolest Secret Location in Texas.” In 2020, Helotes ranked #9 in the “Best Suburbs to Buy a House in San Antonio” by Niche.com

According to Public School Review, the top ranked public schools in Helotes are Beard Elementary, Helotes Elementary, Los Reyes Elementary, May Elementary, Garcia Middle School, O’Connor High School, and Brandeis High School. 

O’Connor High School ranked #20 “Best Public High Schools in San Antonio Area” by Niche.com.

One thing is for sure when you choose to settle in Helotes, you’ll never run out of foods to try. If you’re looking for cheap eats, you can enjoy some delicious burgers and BBQ in the famous Floore’s Country Store, which is one of the oldest go-to restaurants of the locals. You can also enjoy some Asian cuisine at Pho An or authentic Mexican food from Bandera Rd Café & Patron Bar.

Looking to spend some quality time with your partner over dinner, book a table at El Chapparal Mexican where you can enjoy their best-selling Tacos and Tamale Platter. Once you’re done with dinner, cap off your date night at the Helotes Creek Winery and enjoy a few of the 35 different flavors of wines.

Shopping

For big retailer shopping, Helotes residents can take a short drive to The Shops at La Cantera and The Rim. Both are shopping and dining destinations that offer popular name brand stores and a vibrant mix of cultural and entertainment attractions.

Activities & Attractions

Although it’s a small town, Helotes is a place that has much to offer. The city is located midway between SeaWorld and Six Flags Fiesta Texas. Both destinations are popular among families who are looking to spend some quality time with their children. 

If your family is into camping and spending time with nature, Government Canyon State Natural Area is the place to go.

You can also enjoy walking through the paths of O.P. Schnabel Park if what you’re looking for is just a simple day to hang out around town and enjoy nature.

According to the locals, the best place for live music in town is the John T Floore Country store. You won’t have to worry about running out of seats because the venue alone can hold hundreds of people at a time. Josabi’s is also a popular go-to for live bands.
